John Ternus just gave the best defense yet for Vision Pro

Apple’s new CEO John Ternus recently sat down for a lengthy, in-depth interview with French outlet Clique TV, and in it he gave the best defense yet for Apple Vision Pro.

John Ternus compares Vision Pro to the earliest days of personal computers

Apple Vision Pro is an oddity in Apple’s hardware lineup. It isn’t commercially successful the way the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and AirPods are. But the device is a technological marvel, and has garnered a small base of loyal fans who love it.

In the past, Tim Cook defended Vision Pro’s underwhelming sales by saying it’s an “early adopter product.”

Now John Ternus has weighed in, and I found his answer a more satisfying reason for Vision Pro to exist.

In a new interview, Clique TV’s Mouloud Achour asked Ternus: “The Vision Pro: for you is it a test, a flop, or the first step to the future of what’s going to be…a computer?”

Here’s what Ternus said:

Ternus invokes Cook’s language of citing early adopters, but his comparison to the early days of computing is also helpful.

When personal computers first came on the scene, they were very expensive and had extremely limited use cases. But over time that changed, eventually unlocking possibilities that could scarcely have been imagined in the early days.

The dream of lightweight glasses offering full-fledged “spatial computing” features may be several years away. But it’s easy to see that future coming true, and the Vision Pro being a key part of that.
